President’s Volunteer Service Award

Team founders Yoandra, Michael, and Giovanni Sánchez received a Lifetime Award in 2010 for their fifteen years of voluntarism and more than 4000 community service hours helping children in need. Here’s a quote from the press about the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

MDC Students to Receive U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Awards July 15

Eleven to Receive the Lifetime Award during Ceremony at MDC’s Wolfson Campus Miami, July 7, 2010 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) academic philosophy has always placed an emphasis on community service and civic engagement as essential components to a college education.

MDC’s renowned Center for Community Involvement and the more than 7,000 students who participate in academic service-learning projects each year serve as testaments to the college’s goals of enhancing student learning, meeting community needs, and fostering civic responsibility and a sense of caring for others. The achievements of MDC’s most dedicated volunteers will be brought to the forefront when 529 students from throughout all MDC campuses receive the illustrious U.S.President’s Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA) during a special ceremony on July 15, 2010 at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

Eleven students will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) for volunteering in excess of 4,000 community service hours over the course of their lives. This is an admirable achievement as many of these students maintained a full academic course load and held down jobs while completing these hours.

Among this year’s LAA recipients are Yoandra, Michael, and Giovanni Sanchez. This benevolent family started the Miami Power Team Foundation when they were 5, 7, and 9 years old, respectively. The organization uses sports and activities to empower youths with disabilities. Since the Foundation’s creation in 1996, they have helped more than 1,500 disabled children and families.
